Photo Xperience Program (PXP)

Our Photo Xperience Program is a mobile photography initiative dedicated to empowering young people through visual storytelling. The program travels to villages and communities in need, offering accessible training that nurtures creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression.

Over the course of 3–5 days, participants are introduced to the fundamentals of photography, storytelling, and editing. They are guided to use the camera not just as a tool for capturing images, but as a means of documenting lived experiences, preserving histories, and voicing personal and collective narratives.

At the end of each training, the journey culminates in a community exhibition. This immediate showcase allows participants to present their work to family, friends, and community members, turning local spaces into galleries of lived experience. These exhibitions not only celebrate the creative achievements of the youth but also ignite dialogue and pride within the community.

Each participant is honored with a certificate of completion, recognizing their creative journey and new skills. The graduation not only validates their effort but also affirms their role as emerging storytellers and cultural documenters.

The program’s primary aim is to equip youth with practical skills while fostering confidence and agency. By telling their own stories through photography, participants challenge stereotypes, reclaim narratives, and contribute to a broader archive of African and global perspectives.

Since its inception, the Photo Xperience Program has reached communities across Eastern Cape, Botswana, Eswatini (Swaziland), Durban, Swellendam and Panama Each stop leaves behind a legacy of young photographers who continue to document and share their worlds long after the workshops end.

The Muholi Art Institute envisions Photo Xperience as a sustainable movement—one that invests in the next generation of storytellers, ensures representation, and builds bridges between communities through the universal language of images.
