Opening of Zanele Muholi. We Are Here at Foto Arsenal Wien

On 18 September 2026, Foto Arsenal Wien opened We Are Here, Zanele Muholi’s first solo exhibition in Austria. The opening brought together Muholi, independent curator Renée Mussai, artists, curators, collaborators and visitors to mark the presentation of work spanning more than two decades of Muholi’s practice.

This gallery looks back at the evening and the people who made it memorable. From Renée Mussai and Zanele Muholi to the many guests who came to experience the exhibition, the photographs capture conversations, encounters and moments of connection around the work.

Rooted in visual activism and self-representation, Muholi’s practice brings Black LGBTQIA+ lives and histories into view. The exhibition invites audiences to consider questions of identity, gender, memory and representation, and the importance of preserving stories that have too often been overlooked.

The Muholi Art Institute extends its thanks to Foto Arsenal Wien and everyone who joined us for the opening. We are pleased to share these moments from an evening of art, community and exchange in Vienna.
